The Challenge

Huaneng Yinmin is a large-scale open-pit coal mine in Inner Mongolia — one of the harshest operating environments on Earth. Temperatures drop to -40°C in winter, visibility can be near-zero during sandstorms, and the mine operates 24/7 year-round.

The mine relies on a fleet of 100+ heavy-duty hauling trucks, each carrying up to 300 tons of material per trip. Human drivers face extreme fatigue risks during long shifts, and the harsh conditions lead to high driver turnover and frequent safety incidents. Additionally, the fuel costs for this fleet exceed $70 million annually.

The Solution

Working with Huawei, the mine deployed an Ascend-powered autonomous driving system across its hauling fleet. Each truck is equipped with:

"Autonomous trucks don't get tired, don't need heating breaks, and maintain optimal speed profiles that human drivers simply can't match consistently across a 12-hour shift."

Extreme Environment Performance

What makes this deployment exceptional is the environmental resilience. The Ascend hardware operates reliably in conditions that would cripple consumer-grade AI hardware:

Results & Impact

Key Takeaway

Mining represents the most extreme stress-test for AI edge inference hardware: harsh environments, safety-critical real-time decisions, and massive economic impact. The fact that Ascend NPUs deliver reliable autonomous driving performance at -40°C speaks volumes about hardware robustness. For European enterprises evaluating Ascend, if the hardware survives Inner Mongolia, it'll handle your air-conditioned data center without breaking a sweat.
